Wenceslaus Hollar's London Panorama of 1647 forms the basis of the first endpaper illustration.

This was engraved based on drawings made by Hollar from the tower of Southwark Cathederal, (then St. Saviour's)

and was one of the first of its kind.

The second is a modern reinterpretation of the same scene taken from exactly the same spot as Hollar sat and sketched.

The maps on each are contemporaneous to the images.
